Interview Tips #4 - HR Professional, Commercial Company

What’s the worst thing that has happened to you during an interview?

I was relatively new at the company and was interviewing a candidate when the fire alarm went off. The fire marshal had blocked the stairs with a fake fire sign and I didn’t know where the fire exit was which was incredibly awkward.

What’s the worst thing a candidate can say during the interview?

No, I don’t have any questions!

How do you feel someone should dress for an interview?

Smart and presentable. The job may not justify a suit and polished shoes, but candidates should always make an effort. First impressions count for a lot.

Do you feel that the standard challenging question “Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time” still has a place in today’s interview processes?

I think this would depend on the position you are interviewing for, but it’s not a question I use anymore.

When in the interview process should a candidate mention salary?

Never ever at a first interview!

What’s the most important tip you would give to a candidate attending an interview?

Prepare prepare!  Go onto google or similar search engine and type in “questions to ask at an interview” and “questions you may be asked at an interview”.
