Guernsey’s Jobs Market: A Different Story for Young People
Recent UK headlines have highlighted growing concerns for young people there who are entering the workforce. A review reported by the BBC within the last few days has warned that as many as one in six young people in the UK could be out of work, education or training within five years without urgent action. Alongside this, youth unemployment remains elevated and vacancies have fallen, creating a tougher and more competitive environment for school leavers and graduates across the UK.
In Guernsey, however, the situation is very different - and much more encouraging.
A Strong Labour Market
Guernsey continues to benefit from a resilient and stable economy. According to www.gov.gg, latest figures indicate that unemployment is around just 0.8% of the working population, reflecting a near full-employment environment.
This is significantly lower than in the UK and means that, in reality, most people who want to work in Guernsey and have the relevant grades and qualifications are able to find opportunities. For young people leaving education, this creates a far more accessible and supportive jobs market.
Plenty of Available Roles
Rather than a shortage of opportunities, Guernsey is characterised by a steady availability of roles across multiple sectors. Our agency has hundreds of office-based vacancies available at any one time, particularly within the finance and professional sectors.
At the same time, the States of Guernsey job centre regularly lists over 150 current vacancies, covering a range of entry-level or trainee roles.
This diversity means young people can choose from a variety of career paths, whether they are interested in finance, commercial, administration, retail, hospitality or the public sector.
Strong Entry Points for A Level and Graduate Talent
For those with good A Level results or degrees, the outlook is particularly positive. Guernsey’s finance sector - one of the island’s largest employers - continues to create structured entry-level opportunities, including trainee administrator roles and graduate schemes.
These positions are designed to develop long-term careers, offering professional training and qualifications alongside practical experience. As a result, many young people with strong academic results are able to secure their first job relatively quickly and begin progressing with a clear career path.
Why Guernsey Stands Out
Guernsey’s strong position is supported by several key factors. The island’s economy is heavily driven by financial and professional services, which continue to generate consistent demand for skilled employees. In addition, the smaller size of the labour market means less competition for roles, while employers place a strong emphasis on retaining and developing local talent.
For candidates with solid academic results, this creates a clear advantage and a smoother transition from education into employment.
A Positive Outlook
While the UK faces genuine challenges in youth employment, Guernsey offers a far more optimistic outlook. Low unemployment, strong demand for talent, and a wide range of entry-level opportunities mean that young people still have real options available to them.
For those leaving school or university with good A Levels or a degree, plus the ability to learn to utilise the latest AI tools which drive so much in our employment these days, the message is clear: Guernsey remains a place where careers can begin with confidence, not uncertainty.
